This book analyzes the main economic issues of Emerging Market Economies (EMEs) on a country and regional basis. The authors investigate in detail the industry structure, agricultural, manufacturing and service sectors of EMEs. They also present comprehensive research on inflation, growth, employment, and labor force markets. The book also explores the capital market developments, total factor productivity, labor force participation, and foreign direct investment inflows. Moreover, the book discusses the monetary policies in EMEs and the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis on the EMEs. Finally, the book discusses policy implications for EMEs and offers political recommendations for the public institutions in emerging markets

; The objective of this paper is to ascertain why currency crises in emerging economies are often so much more severe than in industrialised countries. One of the crucial questions in this context is what determines the dimension of the crisis. So at first a detailed summary about the macroeconomic, microeconomic, and institutional conditions, including their theoretical mode of action on the exchange rate, used in literature is given. Furthermore certain aspects of market participants´ behaviour and its effects on the evolution of a currency crisis have been analysed. Literature shows plenty of factors, which can be served as determinants of currency crises scale. But main emphasis constitute the macroeconomic conditions like the height of foreign debt, foreign currency reserves and current account deficits as well as the development of the real exchange rate, while the other factors - with the exception of the situation of the domestic banking banking sector - seem to play a minor role. This is particular true for the market participants´ behaviour and the response of the politican decision-makers to the outbreak of the crises. The empirical analysis will be carried out using a rank correlation analysis combined with significance tests. In this thesis the magnitude of the crisis is measured solely by how much the domestic currency depreciates. Certain developments following the onset of the crisis have an immense impact on the dimension of a currency crisis. The empirical analysis shows the importance of country ratings and of the exchange rate sensitivity of inflation. The weight of the last will be more evident, if the development of the real exchange rate prior the outbreak of the crisis is considered additional. Other relevant factors are the trend in money supply and central bank lending during the crisis. The findings reveal the key role that the domestic central bank plays in the evolution of the crisis, using these factors. If the domestic central bank fails to curb the expansion of money supply, inflation, and central bank lending to the banking sector, the domestic currency is at risk to suffer a substantial depreciation. To check the stability of the results, the whole sample was divided in three times two subgroups (emerging markets vs. industrialised countries, serious vs. light crises, early vs. late crises). The ascertained indicators can be more or less applied to all subgroups analysed. However, it should be pointed out that a quite considerable part of a currency's depreciation cannot be explained by means of the empirically used determinants. The explanation for this part lies in coincidental fluctuations or in other factors which could be examined theoretically but not empirically.
In the past, foreign shocks arrived to national economies mainly through trade channels, and transmissions of such shocks took time to come into effect. However, after capital globalization, shocks spread to markets almost immediately. Despite the increasing macroeconomic dangers that the situation generated at emerging markets in the South, nobody at the North was ready to acknowledge the pro-cyclicality of the financial system and the inner weakness of "decontrolled" financial innovations because they were enjoying from the "great moderation." Monetary policy was primarily centered on price stability objectives, without considering the mounting credit and asset price booms being generated by market liquidity and the problems generated by this glut. Mainstream economists, in turn, were not majorly attracted in integrating financial factors in their models. External pressures on emerging market economies (EMEs) were not eliminated after 2008, but even increased as international capital
